C.D. Gopinath, a member of the Indian cricket team that secured its first-ever Test match victory, passed away today. He was 96 years old at the time of his death. He was India’s oldest living cricketer and the world’s second-oldest after Australia’s Neil Harvey.
Born on March 1, 1930, Gopinath played 8 Test matches for India and 83 first-class matches for Madras. He made his Test debut against England in 1951 at Brabourne Stadium. His final Test match was against Australia at Eden Gardens in 1960.
In the first innings of his debut Test, batting at number 8, Gopinath played a half-century innings, followed by 42 runs in the second innings. The fifth Test of his debut series remained a memorable match of his life, as it was in that match that India tasted its first-ever victory in Test cricket.
Following Gopinath’s passing, 95-year-old Chandrakant Patankar is now India’s oldest living cricketer.
