The political atmosphere surrounding the Nagaon by-election has intensified with strong claims and growing controversies among major parties.
AIUDF candidate Badruddin Ajmal, speaking for the first time after being nominated for the by-election, said that despite uncertainties he accepted the candidature in the interest of his party. Ajmal expressed confidence of victory, claiming he would secure the support of more than one lakh Hindu voters while also receiving overwhelming minority votes. He asserted that the real contest in Nagaon would be against the BJP.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister described the by-election as politically significant, stating that a victory in Nagaon would strengthen the BJP-led alliance’s prospects for the 2031 Assembly elections. According to him, success in the constituency could pave the way for the alliance to win all 126 Assembly seats in the state.
The Congress party, however, is facing serious internal unrest over candidate selection. Protests have erupted against the nomination of Shivamani Bora, leading to a wave of resignations from Morigaon district Congress leaders and workers. Under the leadership of the district general secretary, several party members resigned collectively, alleging that the party failed to nominate a minority candidate from the constituency.
Adding to the political debate, Congress leader Meera Borthakur sparked controversy by alleging that the outcome of the election had already been decided through EVM manipulation and that a BJP victory was being ensured. Her remarks have been interpreted by political observers as an indication that the Congress has virtually conceded defeat even before the election is held.
With voting approaching, political rhetoric, internal dissension, and sharp exchanges among rival parties continue to fuel the election battle in Nagaon.
