The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has scripted a historic victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, securing a record third consecutive term in power. Dismantling the Congress-led Opposition alliance, the NDA crossed the three-digit threshold for the first time in the state’s political history by capturing 102 out of the 126 assembly seats. The BJP led the charge by winning 82 seats on its own—comfortably clear of the 64-seat simple majority mark—while its regional allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), secured 10 seats each.
The landslide victory has firmly cemented Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s position as one of the BJP’s most bankable and powerful leaders. Sarma comfortably retained his bastion of Jalukbari for a sixth consecutive time by a massive margin of over 89,000 votes. State BJP President Dilip Saikia attributed the spectacular performance to the double-engine growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a strong administrative focus on infrastructure development, and proactive measures to insulate indigenous communities. Despite the BJP clinching an absolute majority independently, party leadership confirmed that they will continue to govern the state alongside their regional allies.
