The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has formally approached the Election Commission of India (ECI) to lodge a complaint against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of making derogatory and insulting comments directed at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The party alleges that Sarma’s remarks, made during a high-octane election campaign in West Bengal, were not only personal in nature but also violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by lowering the level of political discourse. TMC leaders emphasized that such “distasteful” rhetoric is an affront to the dignity of women and undermines the democratic spirit of the ongoing polls.
In its representation, the TMC urged the poll panel to take immediate and stringent action against the Assam Chief Minister to prevent the further spread of inflammatory language during the campaign. The party argued that the comments were a calculated move to malign Banerjee’s reputation and mislead voters ahead of the crucial phases of the election. This move adds another layer of friction to the already intense political rivalry between the TMC and the BJP, as both parties ramp up their efforts to secure dominance in the Bengal electoral landscape.
