The organisers of the 5th Film Appreciation Course (FAC), scheduled to be held from July 5 to July 11 at CKB Commerce College, Jorhat, have announced the participation of two prominent figures from Indian cinema — internationally acclaimed sound designer Amrit Pritam and renowned filmmaker Haobam Paban Kumar.
Their inclusion has further enhanced the significance of the week-long programme, which aims to bring together leading voices from the fields of film criticism, filmmaking and cinematic studies.
Amrit Pritam, one of India’s most respected sound designers, will participate as a special resource person. Known for his innovative approach to cinematic sound, he has contributed to several acclaimed film productions and has earned recognition at national and international levels.
He has received the prestigious Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Golden Reel Award, which he shared with Academy Award-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty, along with two Producers Guild of India–Apsara Awards. His work has also been recognised by the governments of Assam, Goa and Maharashtra.
During the course, participants will get an opportunity to understand the importance of sound design in filmmaking and how sound contributes to storytelling, mood creation and cinematic expression.
Also joining the programme is acclaimed Manipuri filmmaker Haobam Paban Kumar, known for his unique cinematic style and his engagement with social, cultural and environmental issues. His films and documentaries have been screened at several national and international film festivals and have received critical appreciation.
His debut feature film, Loktak Lairembee (Lady of the Lake), won the National Film Award for Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation at the 64th National Film Awards in 2017. The film was widely appreciated for its sensitive portrayal of ecological challenges surrounding the Loktak Lake ecosystem.
The participation of Amrit Pritam and Haobam Paban Kumar adds further strength to an already distinguished panel featuring noted film critic and FIPRESCI member Dr. Pranjal Borah, who is the Course Director, and eminent film critic, curator and festival personality Premendra Mazumdar, who will serve as Chief Guest, Mentor and Resource Person.
The 5th Film Appreciation Course is being organised jointly by People’s Alliance for Change and Empowerment (PACE), Assam Film Society, Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI) and the CKB Commerce College Film Society.
The programme aims to help participants develop a deeper understanding of cinema as an art form, cultural expression and medium of social engagement. With the participation of leading film professionals, the course is expected to provide aspiring filmmakers, students, cinephiles and researchers with a valuable platform to interact with experts from different areas of cinema.
