The Guwahati city administration has introduced a ₹500 fine for anyone found damaging the city’s water supply infrastructure, with the new regulation taking immediate effect. The measure is aimed at protecting the water distribution network from vandalism, accidental damage and unauthorised tampering, ensuring an uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water to residents across the city.
According to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), damage to pipelines, valves and other water supply components often leads to costly repairs, disrupts distribution and causes temporary water shortages that affect thousands of households. The administration said the penalty is intended to discourage irresponsible behaviour and promote greater public accountability in safeguarding essential civic infrastructure.
