The Gauhati University community has extended significant support to flood-affected people in Assam by contributing one day’s salary of its teaching and non-teaching staff towards the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The initiative raised Rs 25 lakh, which was formally handed over to Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma by a university delegation led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta at Lok Bhawan on Sunday. The university has also undertaken several relief and humanitarian initiatives in flood-affected areas. It provided essential relief materials to 500 affected families in Sivasagar and Charaideo and distributed 5,000 educational kits to help children continue their studies despite the crisis. In addition to relief operations, Gauhati University has taken steps to protect Assam’s cultural heritage from flood damage. Conservation experts and a scientific officer were deployed to flood-affected satras to assist in rescuing and restoring centuries-old Vaishnavite manuscripts damaged by floodwater and fungal growth. Appreciating the university community’s efforts, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised both its humanitarian response and its contribution towards preserving Assam’s historical and cultural heritage. The university’s initiatives reflect a strong spirit of social responsibility, demonstrating how educational institutions can play an important role in supporting communities during natural disasters while safeguarding valuable cultural assets.
