India tasted victory in their final match of the AFC Asian Cup qualifying round. In a dead-rubber match held today in Kochi, India defeated Hong Kong by a margin of 2-1. This win in the final group match helped India salvage some pride.
This comes after a poor run where the Indian team was defeated in three of their first five matches and drew two. Khalid Jamil’s team had even suffered a defeat against a comparatively weaker Bangladesh side.
Ryan Williams made his debut for India today. Ryan, a former Australian citizen, was unable to play against Bangladesh earlier because he hadn’t received FIFA clearance. India secured this victory playing an international match in Kochi after a gap of ten years.
India led 1-0 at halftime thanks to a goal scored by Ryan in the 4th minute of the match. In the 5th minute of the second half, Akash Mishra increased India’s lead to 2-0. Fifteen minutes later, Hong Kong managed to pull back one goal, which remained their only score of the match.
