Two teenage brothers from the same family lost their lives in a tragic landslide triggered by heavy rainfall. The heartbreaking incident occurred on Wednesday in Upper Penli Ward of Mokokchung town, Nagaland. Their mother was also injured in the incident.
The deceased have been identified as Muwalong Sangtam (19) and Thridiba Sangtam (16), sons of Merenba Sangtam of Alisopur village. Muwalong was a Class 12 student and Thridiba was in Class 11 at Queen Mary Higher Secondary School in Mokokchung.
According to the Eastern Nagaland Tribal Association, Mokokchung unit, a sudden landslide hit their rented house in Upper Penli Ward, burying it under mud and debris. Both brothers died in the incident. Their mother is currently undergoing treatment.
The association stated that after a prayer meeting, the bodies of the two teenagers will be taken to their native village, Alisopur. The association has also expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured mother.
It may be mentioned that due to incessant monsoon rains this year, multiple landslides and flash floods have been reported across different parts of Nagaland. Many people have already died in these disasters, and houses, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been severely damaged.
The district administration has urged people living in landslide-prone areas to remain alert as the rains continue. Disaster management teams and the administration are closely monitoring vulnerable areas.
