In a sharp escalation of his election campaign in Assam, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign and domestic policies are being heavily influenced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking at a massive rally, Gandhi claimed that the “double-engine” government is actually a “remote-controlled” administration, suggesting that national interests are being compromised to suit global power dynamics. He argued that this perceived subservience has led to economic policies that favor international conglomerates over small-scale Indian farmers and the indigenous workers of the Northeast.
Turning his focus to the state leadership, Gandhi intensified his offensive against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, reiterating his label of him as the “most corrupt CM in India.” He accused the state government of facilitating a “mafia-style” land grab and converting Assam’s natural resources into a personal “ATM” for the ruling elite. While the BJP has dismissed these claims as “baseless and desperate” attempts to gain relevance, Gandhi’s remarks indicate that the opposition intends to make national sovereignty and high-level corruption the central pillars of their challenge to the NDA’s stronghold in the 2026 Assembly polls.
