Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha has announced plans to construct two additional bypass roads around Agartala to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity with the national highway network. The proposed projects, being taken up under the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), are the Agartala Western Bypass and Agartala Eastern Bypass. The Detailed Project Reports for both projects are currently being prepared. The Western Bypass is expected to be approximately 25.402 kilometres long, starting from the eighth kilometre of National Highway-8 and connecting with National Highway-108 at Lambucherra after passing through the western outskirts of Agartala. The Eastern Bypass is proposed to cover around 22.102 kilometres, beginning at National Highway-108 at Lambucherra and passing through the Khowai–Churaibari corridor before reconnecting with National Highway-8. According to the Chief Minister, the new roads will provide alternative routes for long-distance and through-traffic, allowing vehicles to bypass the congested areas of the capital. The projects are expected to reduce pressure on Agartala’s internal road network, improve traffic movement and strengthen connectivity between different parts of the city and the wider highway network. Tripura currently has four bypass roads—the Mohanpur, Khowai, Khowai–Amtali and Bishalgarh bypasses—all under NHIDCL. The two proposed projects are being viewed as part of the government’s broader effort to upgrade road infrastructure and meet the growing transportation needs of Agartala.
