The School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, organised a one-day awareness programme on “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Agricultural Careers” on August 22 under the ICAR Tribal Sub Plan. The programme, coordinated by Prof. Akali Sema, aimed to familiarise students with the growing role of artificial intelligence in agriculture and emerging career opportunities at the intersection of technology and farming. Facilitated by Damaso Digital Solutions Pvt. Ltd., the sessions covered practical applications of AI in crop and disease monitoring, precision farming, smart irrigation, drones, soil analysis, yield prediction, market intelligence and supply chain management. Students were introduced to technologies including Machine Learning, Generative AI, Computer Vision, Predictive Analytics, AI Automation and Agentic AI. The programme also highlighted career pathways in precision agriculture, agricultural data analysis, remote sensing and GIS, drone mapping, AgriTech product development, digital agriculture services and AI-enabled extension. Speakers stressed that technical skills must be complemented by critical thinking, communication, adaptability, ethics and leadership, with students encouraged to retain human judgement when using AI. Interactive activities allowed participants to explore the concept of a “farm of the future” and imagine how emerging technologies could transform agriculture by 2035. The programme concluded with a call for agricultural students to become AI-ready and use technology responsibly to improve productivity and sustainability.
