Haryana’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stepped up its food safety inspections ahead of Diwali, seizing adulterated food products worth nearly Rs 84 lakh during a special enforcement drive. The campaign focused on identifying unsafe food items and preventing their sale during the festive season.
Between September 1 and November 5, the department collected 2,375 food samples for testing, marking an increase of 82.55 per cent compared with the 1,301 samples gathered during the corresponding period last year.
Of the 861 samples analysed so far, 170 failed to meet the prescribed food quality standards. The findings highlighted concerns over food adulteration, particularly involving products that see increased demand during festival celebrations.
During the inspection campaign, officials seized food products valued at Rs 83.96 lakh, including ghee and various dairy items. Authorities also took action against large quantities of adulterated sweets and paneer, destroying approximately 50,000 kilograms of these products.
The intensified operation reflects the administration’s efforts to monitor food quality and prevent consumers from purchasing unsafe products during Diwali. With sweets and dairy products forming an important part of festive celebrations, the inspections aimed to address potential health risks associated with adulteration.
The increased sampling compared with last year also indicates a wider inspection effort. The enforcement drive highlights the importance of food safety monitoring and stricter checks to protect consumers during the festive period.
