Gateway to the East Assam Seeks Deeper Strategic Ties with Japan in Semiconductors and Clean Energy

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state is actively looking to strengthen its partnership with Japan across high-tech and strategic sectors. The announcement followed a productive meeting in New Delhi between the Chief Minister and the Japanese Ambassador to India, Ono Keiichi, who hosted Sarma at his official residence for Cha-no-yu, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The discussions focused heavily on translating the outcomes of the recently concluded India-Japan Summit into regional growth opportunities, with Assam aiming to position itself as a central participant in the expanding bilateral relationship between the two nations.

The state government is prioritizing three core areas for future cooperation: semiconductor research, clean energy infrastructure, and human resource development through specialized Japanese language training. As Assam works to build a comprehensive ecosystem around its emerging high-technology manufacturing sector, technical collaboration and research partnerships with Japan are seen as vital to developing local capabilities. Additionally, integrating language training alongside technical education is intended to prepare the state’s workforce for employment in global firms requiring technical and linguistic fluency. Reaffirming the state’s commitment, Sarma emphasized that Assam is ready to contribute meaningfully to the overarching India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
