Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday assured Assam of full support from the Centre for relief and rehabilitation in flood-affected areas, stating that there would be “no shortage” of assistance for the state.
Accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Nadda visited the flood-hit Bihubor and Nepali Khuti areas of Sivasagar district and interacted with families affected by the devastating floods.
Speaking to residents during the visit, Nadda said the Centre was providing complete financial assistance to Assam and that central teams were assessing the extent of damage caused by the floods.
“On behalf of the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I assure Himanta Biswa Sarma and all of you that there will be no shortage of relief assistance. Complete financial assistance is being extended to the state,” Nadda said.
“Central teams are assessing the scale of damage here. We are fully engaged in rehabilitation efforts,” he added.
Bihubor and Nepali Khuti are among the worst-affected areas of Sivasagar, where the floods caused extensive damage to homes, agricultural land, livestock and public infrastructure. Several families were forced to leave their homes and take shelter in relief camps or temporary shelters on higher ground.
During the visit, Nadda and Sarma interacted with affected residents and took stock of the difficulties faced by families who lost their homes, household belongings and livelihoods in the floods.
The Union minister’s visit comes as the Assam government continues relief distribution and damage assessment across Sivasagar and other flood-affected districts. The state has also announced financial assistance for affected households, including support for damaged houses, livestock losses, crop damage and livelihood restoration.
The Centre’s assurance comes as authorities step up rehabilitation efforts to help flood-hit communities rebuild their homes and livelihoods following one of the most devastating floods to affect parts of Upper Assam in recent years.
