Atletico Madrid and Arsenal are set to face off in the second semi-final of the Champions League. The first leg will take place at Atletico’s home ground.
Arsenal reached the semi-finals after a flawless group stage (eight wins in eight matches) and knockout victories over Bayer Leverkusen and Sporting Lisbon. Despite a recent loss in the Carabao Cup and the pressure of maintaining their lead in the EPL against Manchester City, Mikel Arteta’s side has a golden opportunity to win the Champions League. Arteta is understandably thrilled, as this is the first time in the club’s 140-year history they have reached back-to-back semi-finals.
However, Arsenal has struggled with consistency lately. In their last five matches across all competitions, they have managed only two wins, with two losses and one draw. For the semi-final, getting the players back into top form is crucial. Fortunately, Arteta has a full-strength squad with no major injury concerns.
Reflecting on their group-stage victory against Atletico, midfielder Declan Rice said, “It was an enjoyable match. We know what we need to do against them in the semi-finals.” Adding to that, Gabriel Martinelli remarked:
“Even though we won in the group stage, this match won’t be easy. However, we have full confidence in our abilities.”
On the other hand, Atletico Madrid did not get a direct ticket to the knockouts after finishing 14th in the group stage, forcing them to play extra matches. After overcoming Club Brugge and Tottenham, they defeated a powerful Barcelona side in the quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
Having lost to Real Madrid in the finals of both the 2013-14 and 2015-16 seasons, Diego Simeone is once again dreaming of his first Champions League trophy. He stated:
“The club has never tasted Champions League glory. Everyone must fulfill their responsibility to win it for the club. It’s not pressure; everything depends on the players. They have to play well.”
Simeone is placing great trust in Julian Alvarez. Although Alvarez won the Champions League with Manchester City, he joined Atletico with the resolve to win it again. His performance has been outstanding, with 9 goals and 5 assists in 13 matches. He is expected to play a major role in taking the team to the final.
