Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued strict instructions to police curb unauthorised flood relief collection across the state.
The Chief Minister directed the police to stop the forcible collection of flood relief donations from shops and households, and ordered an end to seeking donations on highways.
Stating that flood relief operations are now being carried out under the government’s supervision, Sarma said there is no longer any need for people to collect donations from the public through roadside campaigns, donation boxes or QR code scanners.
“I have directed the police to check such activities and ensure that people no longer collect flood relief funds from the public in this manner. The entire process of relief distribution is now under the government’s purview,” the Chief Minister said.
He noted that while such initiatives may have been justified during the initial phase of the floods, the situation has changed significantly. “In the first seven days, the circumstances were different because the government could not immediately reach every affected area. Now, the government has access to all flood-hit locations, people can also approach the authorities directly, and the final assessment for relief and rehabilitation is underway,” he said.
Sarma said those wishing to assist flood-affected families should contribute from their own resources rather than raising money from the public.
