Arunachal Pradesh has taken a significant step towards clean energy development by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Norwegian company Tidal Sail AS to establish India’s first 500-kW River Kinetic Energy Demonstration Project. The initiative aims to generate renewable electricity directly from river currents using advanced Norwegian technology, without the need for large dams or extensive civil infrastructure.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday and will be implemented through the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CES&HS). The project is being supported by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Innovation Norway under the India–Norway Green Partnership, reflecting the growing collaboration between the two countries in the field of sustainable energy.
The demonstration plant is expected to showcase an innovative approach to harnessing the natural flow of rivers for electricity generation while minimising environmental impact. By avoiding major construction works, the technology offers a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to conventional hydropower projects.
State officials believe the project has the potential to open new opportunities for renewable energy development in Arunachal Pradesh, a region with abundant river resources. If successful, the initiative could serve as a model for similar projects across India, supporting the country’s transition to cleaner energy sources and contributing to long-term energy security and environmental sustainability.
