After 22 years, Arsenal’s dream of winning the Premier League title suffered a massive blow against Manchester City. In this “unofficial final,” City’s victory by a 4-1 margin has made the title race significantly more exciting.
Before this match, Arsenal was at the top of the points table with 75 points from 33 matches. On the other hand, City had 73 points from 31 matches. With this win, the gap between the two teams has effectively vanished. Given City’s current form and the fact they have games in hand, the possibility of them winning the league has increased tremendously.
De Bruyne scored for City in the 7th minute to give them an early advantage. City continued to create pressure, and John Stones scored the second goal just before halftime (in the 45+1 minute).
De Bruyne scored again in the 54th minute, effectively sealing the game.
Rob Holding scored a late consolation goal for Arsenal in the 86th minute. Erling Haaland scored City’s fourth goal in stoppage time (90+5 minute) to complete the rout.
Arsenal has led the table for most of the season, the title is now Manchester City’s to lose. Since City has played fewer matches than Arsenal, winning their remaining games would guarantee them the championship, leaving Arsenal’s fate out of their own hands.
