Amidst growing scrutiny over Riyan Parag’s recent performances, Rajasthan Royals’ batting coach Vikram Rathour has come forward to offer a staunch defense of the team’s captain. Despite a lackluster start to the current IPL season, Rathour remains unfazed, asserting that the young leader is on the verge of a significant breakthrough.
The Captaincy Conundrum
The spotlight on Riyan Parag has intensified not just because of his blade, but because of his role as the captain. With established Indian internationals like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel in the ranks, many have questioned the management’s decision to keep the faith in Riyan. The statistics certainly paint a difficult picture: in eight outings, he has managed a mere 88 runs, struggling with a strike rate of 112.82 and failing to cross a personal best of 20.
Addressing the media in Jaipur, Rathour dismissed claims that there are technical issues with the captain’s game.
“There is absolutely no flaw in Riyan’s batting technique,” Rathour stated firmly. “He is hitting the ball beautifully in the nets and is putting in the hard yards behind the scenes. Cricket is a game of cycles; sometimes you hit a patch where the runs simply don’t flow, regardless of how well you’re playing.”
The coach emphasized that this “dry spell” is a natural part of an athlete’s journey and expressed absolute confidence that a “strong comeback” is imminent.
With Parag also trailing behind the likes of Ravindra Jadeja (132 runs) and Donovan Ferreira (130 runs), the gap in output has become a focal point for critics. However, the Royals’ management seems content to look past the scoreboard, banking on Riyan’s work ethic and the “big innings” they believe is just one match away.
