After nearly a decade of rejection, delays, and locked doors, Mohit Suri’s film Saiyaara was finally released in theaters. Now, Anurag Kashyap claims that the film’s success demonstrates how a firm confidence in a story can transform everything.
In an interview with ANI, Anurag discussed how unusual it is for filmmakers to adhere to their vision when the industry repeatedly says no. “Very few individuals preserve their stories, as Mohit Suri did with Saiyaara. So many producers rejected, and no one understood why. Usko naye logon ke saath banani thi, jaise banani thi, waise banani thi, but usne chhodi nahin image, usne suffer kiya uske liye, 6 saal 7 saal suffer kiya, banayi usne. (He was determined to make it with new performers and in his own unique style. He suffered for 6-7 years yet still survived).
The film eventually introduced debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda and, despite all odds, became a surprise box office success.
Old classics are filling theaters again.
Kashyap also mentioned another trend in audience taste: the increased popularity of re-releases. Old titles, such as Pyaasa and Shree 420, as well as Andaz Apna Apna and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, are bringing audiences back to theaters, while many new movies fail to connect.
Social media users frequently criticize a lack of new ideas, but Kashyap believes the true problem is producers’ unwillingness to take risks on original stories.
Anurag Kashyap’s Next Big Release
The director is now preparing on Nishaanchi, a criminal drama that will star Aaishvary Thackeray as brothers Babloo and Dabloo, opposite Vedika Pinto. The film will be released on September 19.
Saiyaara chronicled the dramatic journey of two young lovers, Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, who were torn between dreams, heartbreak, and familial expectations. Despite being rejected by multiple producers throughout production, the film resonated with moviegoers due to its fresh faces, beautiful music, and sincere storytelling. What began as a risky endeavor with novices turned into a surprising box office triumph, winning critical acclaim and strong word of mind.
