The 17th All Assam Ranking Table Tennis Tournament, organized by the Golaghat District Sports Association in memory of Madhurjya Gogoi, commenced today at the indoor stadium adjacent to the Golaghat Stadium.
As the first official program of the tournament this morning, the flags of the Assam Table Tennis Association and the Golaghat District Sports Association were hoisted by Prasanta Dutta, an executive member of the Assam Table Tennis Association, and Dr. Ajit Borah, President of the Golaghat District Sports Association, respectively.
At the beginning of the opening ceremony of the tournament—which features a total of six events across both men’s and women’s categories with over 430 competitors participating from 13 districts—the lamp in front of Madhurjya Gogoi’s portrait was lit by his mother, Tilottoma Gogoi. The welcome address was delivered by President Dr. Ajit Borah.
The tournament was formally inaugurated by District Commissioner Pulali Gohain in the presence of APDCL officials Robert Handique and Biman Bhagawati; Gobinda Das; Assam Table Tennis Association official Prasanta Dutta; Nayan Cheleng; Jorhat District Sports Association official Nayanjyoti Sarma; and Iswar Borthakur, among others.
It is worth mentioning that during the inaugural ceremony, veteran sports journalist Rupak Dutta, sports organizers M. Ali Ahmed and Asim Sarma, along with former TT players Ajanta Ahmed, Sujata Bhuyan, Bipasa Kakati, Bobby Duarah, Amitabh Gogoi, Bhaskar Kakati, and Joba Konwar were felicitated.
During the event, artists from Sur Sandhan captivated everyone by performing Bhupen Hazarika’s iconic song, “Ei Prithibi Ek Kreedangan” (This World is a Playground). The ceremony was hosted by Parikshit Dutta, Vice President of the District Sports Association, and Sanjib Handique, General Secretary. The preliminary round matches of the tournament, which will run until May 24, have already begun.
