The vibrant sounds of the dhol and pepa echoed through Hyderabad as the city’s Assamese community gathered in large numbers to celebrate Rongali Bihu. Organized by local cultural associations, the event brought together hundreds of professionals, students, and families living in the Telangana capital, transforming a local venue into a “mini-Assam.” The celebration featured traditional Husori performances and energetic Bihu dances, showcasing the rich folk heritage of the Northeast to a diverse Hyderabadi audience.
A major highlight of the festivities was the authentic culinary spread, featuring traditional delicacies like pitha (rice cakes), laru, and jolpan, which were prepared by community members to maintain the authentic taste of home. Organizers emphasized that such gatherings are vital for the diaspora to stay connected to their roots and pass on cultural traditions to the younger generation born outside the state. The event concluded with a community feast and a showcase of Assamese handlooms, specifically the Muga and Pat silk mekhela chadors, further highlighting the cultural synergy between the Assamese community and their adopted home in Hyderabad.
