Defending champions Argentina concluded their World Cup preparations with a massive victory on home soil. This was Argentina’s final match at home on the eve of the World Cup. Although they had defeated a weak Mauritania 2-1 three days ago, Argentina’s performance in that match was of a very poor standard. In today’s match, however, Argentina played like true champions, defeating Zambia by a 5-0 margin.
In a one-sided match, Argentina took a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from Julian Alvarez and Lionel Messi. In the second half, Nicolas Otamendi and Valentin Barco increased the lead. The fourth goal of the match was an own goal by Zambia.
There is a possibility that Argentina will participate in two more friendly matches before departing for America. However, it is not yet confirmed which countries they will play against. Both those matches will take place in a European country. This was Messi’s final match on home soil in an Argentina jersey.
