On August 21, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol shared provisional financial data with the Lok Sabha, revealing that Tata Group-owned Air India and Air India Express reported a combined pre-tax loss of ₹9,568.4 crore for FY25, according to PTI. While most domestic carriers faced losses, IndiGo stood out with a pre-tax profit of ₹7,587.5 crore. SpiceJet and Akasa Air reported losses of ₹58.1 crore and ₹1,983.4 crore, respectively.
Air India recorded a pre-tax loss of ₹3,890.2 crore, whereas Air India Express, typically profitable, posted a significant loss of ₹5,678.2 crore in 2024-25. Debt levels revealed that Air India had ₹26,879.6 crore in debt, while IndiGo’s debt was ₹67,088.4 crore. Air India Express, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet carried debts of ₹617.5 crore, ₹78.5 crore, and ₹886 crore, respectively.
Mohol emphasized that since deregulation in 1994, airlines independently manage financial and operational decisions, including debt and resource management, based on commercial considerations.
