Dubai, September 17: India spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has dethroned Jacob Duffy of New Zealand to take the top spot in the ICC’s new T20I bowlers rankings.
The spinner advanced three places to take the position for the first time in his career. With that, he became only the third Indian bowler, behind Jasprit Bumrah and Ravi Bishnoi, to hold the top slot in the ICC T20I bowling rankings.
The 34-year-old delivered a crucial session against the UAE in India’s Asia Cup 2025 campaign opener. Chakaravarthy took 1-4 in two overs, while veteran spinner Kuldeep Yadav ripped through the opposition’s batting lineup.
In India’s second Group A game against archrivals Pakistan, the leg-spinner took one wicket in four overs while giving 24 runs, resulting in a severe economy of 6.00.
India has risen to the top of the Test and T20I bowling rankings, with Jasprit Bumrah comfortably leading the way in the red ball format.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav, who has been leading India’s spin attack in the recent Asia Cup, has gained enormous points, moving up 16 places to 23rd.
While Australia’s Adam Zampa moved up one spot to fourth, Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Thushara advanced six spots to sixth place. Other notable gainers in the latest rankings are Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed (11 spots up) and Sufiyan Muqeem (four spots up), who have risen to 16th and 11th place, respectively.
In terms of batter rankings, Abhishek Sharma remains at the top, with a career-high rating of 884. England hitters Phil Salt and Jos Buttler moved up one spot apiece to take second and third places, respectively.
Suryakumar Yadav of India lost one spot to seventh, as Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka took his position at sixth. After some blistering knocks, Dewald Brevis is on the verge of breaking into the top ten. He’s currently rated eleventh.
