In a major development following the death of Assam’s beloved singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, the Gauhati High Court has officially constituted an exclusive fast-track sessions court to conduct day-to-day trial proceedings. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the move as a “significant milestone,” announcing that Baksa District Judge Sharmila Bhuyan has been nominated to preside over the case. This decision comes after the state cabinet formally requested an expedited judicial process to ensure a time-bound trial, addressing the immense public interest and the “mystery” surrounding the 52-year-old singer’s passing in Singapore last year.
While initial reports from Singapore suggested accidental drowning during a swimming incident on September 19, 2025, the Assam government later characterised the case as a “plain and simple murder,” leading to a parallel investigation by a Special Investigation Team of the CID. A massive 12,000-page chargesheet has since been filed, naming seven individuals—including the singer’s manager, band members, and a serving police officer—who are currently in judicial custody. The transition to a daily trial format is intended to avoid the delays often associated with high-profile cases and reinforces the government’s commitment to delivering transparent and timely justice to the late artist’s family and his millions of grieving fans.
