The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a ₹275 per quintal increase in the Minimum Support Price for raw jute for the 2026-27 season, setting the new rate at ₹5,925 per quintal. This decision, announced by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on February 24, 2026, is expected to primarily benefit jute growers in West Bengal and Assam, the country’s leading producers of the “golden fibre.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the move as a major step toward boosting farmer incomes and improving both the quantity and quality of production across the sector.
The revised MSP for TD-3 grade raw jute ensures a 61.8% return over the weighted average cost of production, aligning with the government’s long-standing commitment to keep support prices at least 1.5 times the cost. According to official data, the MSP for raw jute has seen a 2.5-fold increase since 2014-15, rising by ₹3,525 per quintal over the last decade. The Jute Corporation of India will continue to serve as the nodal agency for price support operations, with the Union government promising full reimbursement for any losses incurred to prevent distress sales by farmers.
