The Pacific was on tsunami alert following an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s far east. Alaska and Hawaii experienced violent waves, while other parts of the US West Coast saw minimal impact. Warning centres in the US shared estimated timings for coasts to be hit, providing ample time to prepare for emergencies. Alaska’s western Aleutian Islands, Kodiak, and Southeast Alaska witnessed the first tsunami waves, but the alerts have since been downgraded. Tsunami waves were reported from Washington, Oregon, and California, with the largest wave observed at Arena Cove, California.
