7 Top Awami League Leaders Sentenced to Death for Crimes Against Humanity; Verdict of Bangladesh Tribunal

Following the announcement of Sheikh Hasina’s return to Bangladesh, seven top leaders of the Awami League have been sentenced to death. The International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh delivered the verdict on Tuesday in a case involving genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the suppression of the 2024 student movement.
The significant ruling was handed down by Tribunal No. 2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.
Those sentenced to death include the party’s General Secretary Obaidul QuaderbJoint General Secretary Baharuddin Nasim, and former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat.
Additionally, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain, and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan were awarded the maximum penalty.
The case focused on the violence that occurred in July and August 2024 during the student-led uprising against the then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government. According to the tribunal, the charges of murder, incitement to violence, and conspiracy to murder were proven against all seven leaders.
Previously, in 2025, International Crimes Tribunal No. 1 had also sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death on five serious charges, including ordering the use of drones, helicopters, and lethal weapons against protesters.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024, following the fall of her government due to the mass uprising. The announcement of these death sentences, coming alongside Hasina’s recent statement about returning to Dhaka in December, has caused a major stir in Bangladesh’s political circles.
