Thirty-three students in Mizoram have pledged to donate their eyes after death, taking the state’s total number of registered and pledged eye donors to 9,345, according to Health and Family Welfare Principal Director Dr Lalthlengliani. The development reflects growing awareness of corneal donation in the state, where the eye bank was inaugurated in 2008 and the first successful corneal transplant was performed in 2009. The latest pledges were made during the 41st Eye Donation Fortnight programme held in Aizawl, adding to the 9,312 donors previously registered with the eye bank. So far, 632 people have donated their eyes after death, while around 400 people have registered as recipients. Corneal donation is a time-sensitive process in which the cornea of a deceased donor can be used to restore sight to people suffering from corneal blindness. During the 2025-26 year, families of 67 eye donors were presented with certificates of appreciation for their contribution. The Mizoram eye bank has also retrieved 42 corneas during the current financial year up to July, with 23 corneal transplant procedures already completed. Health officials said the continued rise in pledges highlights increasing public understanding of how eye donation can help restore vision and improve the lives of people affected by corneal blindness.
