Balidan Diwas 2026 was observed at the Multi Utility Hall of the Gorkha Public Panchayat Complex in Chandmari, Kohima, on August 25 to honour the supreme sacrifices of Major Durga Malla and Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse. Organised by the Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima (GPPK) in association with Gorkha Nagas, clubs and Jatiya Sansthas, the programme brought together members of the community and well-wishers to remember the martyrs and reflect on their legacy. Addressing the gathering, Kohima Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem said Martyrs’ Day should serve not only as an occasion for remembrance but also as a time for gratitude, reflection and renewed commitment to the values for which the martyrs sacrificed their lives. He highlighted the Gorkha community’s long-standing contributions to the nation’s defence and security, as well as to Nagaland’s social, cultural and economic development. Buchem urged young people to draw inspiration from the lives of the martyrs and uphold discipline, integrity, compassion, courage and respect for others. He also called for greater unity, communal harmony and mutual respect among communities, stressing that the best tribute to martyrs is to build a peaceful, inclusive, responsible and just society. Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies Bharati Chinhal and Neisielie Kenguruse, father of late Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, also addressed the gathering. The programme included a special musical performance by Karishma Baraily, while GPPK president Santu Thapa delivered the welcome address and advisor Ranjeet Lama proposed the vote of thanks.
