Assam Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Kaushik Rai, undertook a detailed field inspection of key components of the South Central Guwahati and South East Guwahati Water Supply Project on Friday and reviewed the overall progress of the projects with senior officials and representatives of various line departments.
The inspection was undertaken as part of a scheduled review of the Guwahati Jal Board’s ongoing water supply projects. The day-long programme included visits to the Water Treatment Plants of both projects, Master Balancing Reservoir at Ramsahill and the Gopal Nagar Master Balancing Reservoir.
The scheduled programme also included inspection of key project facilities.
The Minister directed the officials to ensure efficient functioning of the system and regular supply of quality drinking water. He directed the engineers and officials to expedite construction while maintaining the prescribed quality standards.
It may be noted that the South Central Guwahati Water Supply Project has water treatment capacity of 191 MLD and the South East Guwahati Water Supply Project envisages a 98 MLD Water Treatment Plant, expandable to 147 MLD, along with distribution infrastructure covering 46 District Metered Areas (DMAs).
The Minister also visited the proposed site for the Guwahati Sewerage Project near Borsola Beel, Chatribari, and reviewed the proposed development.
The JICA-assisted Guwahati Sewerage Project aims to establish a modern sewerage system comprising sewer networks, pumping stations and sewage treatment facilities, thereby improving sanitation, public health and the quality of life in Guwahati.
Later, Rai chaired a detailed Project Review Meeting at the Guwahati Jal Board Office Conference Hall, where the overall progress of the South Central and South East Guwahati Water Supply Projects was assessed.
Issues requiring coordination with various line departments were also discussed, with emphasis on resolving bottlenecks and ensuring timely completion of the projects.
The review meeting was scheduled specifically for discussion on project progress and issues involving other line departments.
Addressing the officials, the Minister emphasised that the focus should remain on completing the projects within the stipulated timelines and ensuring reliable, sustainable and quality water supply to the people of Guwahati.
He directed the concerned engineers and officials to closely monitor the progress of works and take timely measures to resolve issues affecting implementation.
Attending the review meeting Pradyut Bordoloi MLA, Dispur; Dipturanjan Sarmah, MLA, New Guwahati; Dr Tapan Das, MLA, Dimoria also expressed their views and assured full cooperation in timely completion of the projects.
Mrigen Sarania, Mayor, Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Secretary, Department of Housing and Urban Affairs Dr Jeevan B; Managing Director, Guwahati Jal Board Rohan Kumar Jha; Commissioner, GMC Chinmoy Prakash Phookan, along with officials from PWD, Water Resources Department, NF Railway, NHAI, NHIDCL, Power Grid, DK Assam, L&T and other concerned departments and agencies were present during the review meeting.
