The Nyishi Nyidung Nyvgjwvng Rallying (NNMR), a social organisation representing the Nyishi community, has urged the Nyishi Elite Society (NES) to take appropriate action over alleged remarks concerning the Nyishi tribe, its indigenous faith, cultural traditions and the Nyokum Yullo festival.
In a memorandum submitted to the NES president, the NNMR sought clarification from James Techi Tara over what it described as repeated statements that allegedly questioned the origin of the Nyishi community, the Donyi-Polo faith, the traditional Nyishi headgear podum, and the significance of the Nyokum Yullo festival. The organisation also raised objections over alleged remarks by Nyishi MLA Nikh Kamin regarding the festival and expressed concerns over the use of the term “Nyishi” as a prefix by the Nyishi Baptist Church Council.
The NNMR stated that some of the alleged claims were historically unverified and could affect the community’s indigenous identity, cultural heritage and traditional beliefs. It maintained that the Nyishi people have a distinct historical and cultural lineage supported by their ancestral traditions.
Defending Nyokum Yullo as a significant annual festival of the Nyishi community, the organisation said the celebration holds deep cultural and spiritual importance and urged that indigenous traditions be respected to maintain social harmony.
The NNMR also requested the NES to examine concerns regarding the use of the term “Nyishi” in religious nomenclature, stating that the name represents an ethnic identity shared by people belonging to diverse faiths.
