Leading oncologists, scientists, academicians and researchers from across Northeast India have joined hands to establish a dedicated platform for collaborative cancer research, innovation and evidence-based patient care. The initiative has resulted in the formation of the Cancer Research and Innovation Foundation of North East India (CRIF-NEI), which aims to strengthen partnerships among clinicians, researchers, academic institutions and healthcare organisations across the region.
The foundation was formally constituted during a meeting held in Guwahati, attended by experts from leading medical institutions, universities and research organisations from Assam and other northeastern states. The initiative brings together specialists from institutions including IIT Guwahati, AIIMS Guwahati, Gauhati University, Assam down town University, Martin Luther Christian University, the Nuclear Medicine Diagnostic and Imaging Centre, ARHI, GNRC, Health City Hospital and several other organisations.
Members of the foundation have resolved to promote multicentric cancer research projects, scientific conferences, Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes, cancer screening initiatives, capacity-building activities and public awareness campaigns to improve cancer care across the Northeast.
Eminent oncologist and Managing Director of the North East Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, Dr. M. N. Baruah, has agreed to guide the foundation’s scientific activities and future research programmes. He said the platform would strengthen scientific collaboration and accelerate research that directly benefits cancer patients in the region.
The foundation has also outlined a long-term vision of establishing the Northeast as a recognised hub for collaborative cancer research, innovation and precision oncology, with the ultimate goal of improving cancer diagnosis, treatment and overall patient outcomes.
