Government intervention has created a new crisis in Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Under government directives, President Shammi Silva, along with other officials, has been forced to resign before the completion of their terms. Various allegations of corruption had been leveled against Sri Lankan cricket officials for a long time. Due to this government interference, Sri Lanka might face sanctions from the ICC (International Cricket Council).
Shammi Silva had 11 months remaining in his two-year tenure. However, he took the decision to resign following an emergency meeting yesterday. As a result of the management board being dissolved, other officials have also stepped down. Allegations of corruption and various types of mismanagement had been rising against Sri Lanka Cricket for many days. The Sri Lankan government was dissatisfied with the various accusations brought against the country’s wealthiest sports organization. It is noteworthy that in 2023, the ICC had briefly suspended Sri Lanka due to government interference.
