During her visit to Assam, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took sharp aim at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, urging him to focus on his future vision for the state rather than dwelling on past political disappointments. Her remarks followed the Chief Minister’s recent claims that his path to becoming the Congress Chief Minister in 2014 was blocked by Rahul Gandhi. Priyanka Gandhi characterized Sarma’s focus on decade-old decisions as a distraction from his administration’s record, alleging that the Chief Minister has “betrayed the trust” of the people through widespread corruption and negative, divisive politics.
The Congress General Secretary also condemned the BJP’s tactics of targeting the families of political opponents, specifically citing the vicious attacks on State Congress President Gaurav Gogoi. She argued that such personal strikes are a hallmark of the BJP’s “politics of hatred,” which she claimed the people of Assam are ready to reject in favor of a more positive, unifying leadership. Additionally, she highlighted concerns over women’s safety in the state, accusing the BJP government of luring female voters with cash incentives before elections while failing to protect them from increasing rates of crime.
