NASA has officially selected Axiom Space to lead the fifth private astronaut mission (Ax-5) to the International Space Station (ISS), scheduled for launch no earlier than January 2027. The mission, departing from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, will see a crew of four spend up to 14 days aboard the orbiting laboratory. As part of the agreement, Axiom Space will procure essential services from NASA—such as cargo delivery and in-orbit resources—while NASA will utilize Axiom’s return flight capabilities to bring temperature-sensitive scientific samples back to Earth.
The mission is a key component of NASA’s broader strategy to foster a robust commercial space economy in low Earth orbit. By utilizing the ISS as a proving ground for private industry, the agency aims to refine the technologies and partnerships necessary for future deep-space exploration to the Moon and Mars. Axiom Space CEO Jonathan Cirtain emphasized that these missions not only expand the global community of space explorers but also provide critical data for the development of Axiom Station, the company’s planned commercial successor to the ISS.
